How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they have different functions however the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car is able to start when the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is connected however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or from a parts store.
